Mat Side Protocol Updated to Reflect Challenge Procedures

    Feb 16th, 2012

This protocol has been adopted with consideration of the “Challenge” procedures adopted by USA Wrestling.

    Challenge Procedures:

This rule will be in affect only when there is a 3 person officiating crew.

No more than 2 coaches will be allowed in the corner. The coaches are never allowed to address either the referee or the judge. Violation of this rule may result in a YELLOW or RED CARD being issued.

The coach will indicate a challenge in a timely manner by approaching the Chairman. During a break in the action, the Chairman will direct the referee to stop the match. Only one coach is allowed to approach the Chairman (official keeping score) or the Controller (adult mat official assigned to that specific mat). The coach will state what call he is challenging. The Chairman and/or Controller will assemble the officiating team, inform them of the challenge issue, and ask for the team to reconsider the call. After a short discussion, the Chairman or Controller will indicate the results of the challenge.

If the challenge is upheld, the points will be changed accordingly. A challenge is considered to be upheld if the original call is changed. As the challenge was “successful”, the coach will retain his ability to challenge again during the match.

If the challenge is not upheld, the coach will no longer be able to challenge any calls durig the duration of this specific match. In addition, the opposing wrestilng will receive 1 point.

If the coach attempts to question another call during the same match, the Chairman or Controller will issue that coach a YELLOW CARD warning. This warning will stand for the entire duration of the tournament. If the coach attempts to question yet another call during the same match (or any subsequent times on any other matches where the challenge was not upheld), a RED CARD will be issue and the coach will be required to leave the premises for the duration of the tournament.
